How to Hang Posters and Signs: Choosing the Right Display Fixings

Choosing the right fixing keeps your promotional sign straight, visible and securely in position. The best option will depend on the sign’s size, weight and material, where it will be displayed and how long it needs to remain in place.

Consider the sign itself

A lightweight paper poster needs a different fixing from a rigid Foamex, Correx, acrylic or card panel. Before choosing, consider:

  • Size: Wider signs often need two fixing points to remain level.
  • Weight: Heavier signs require stronger hooks, wires, chains and ceiling fixings.
  • Material: Flexible posters suit grippers, while rigid boards may need holes, clips or panel fixings.
  • Location: The fixing must suit the ceiling, window, shelf or display unit.

Signs near doors, air-conditioning units or busy walkways may also need extra support to prevent movement.

Poster grippers

Poster grippers hold the edge of a paper, card or lightweight printed graphic, helping it hang neatly without curling or tearing around individual fixing points.

A top gripper provides a secure hanging point, while a second gripper along the bottom adds weight and helps keep the poster flat. They are particularly useful for promotions that change regularly, as the graphic can be replaced without removing the complete hanging system.

Ceiling fixings, hooks, wires and chains

Suspending signs from the ceiling keeps promotional messages visible above shelves and displays. A typical system combines a suitable ceiling button or fixing with wires or chains and hooks that connect to the sign.

Wires create a clean, discreet finish, while chains can provide greater strength or easier height adjustment. Wider signs should normally use two suspension points to distribute the weight and keep the display level.

Always check that the ceiling and every component are suitable for the total weight being supported.

Suction cups for windows

Suction cups are ideal for attaching lightweight signs to clean, smooth glass without drilling or applying adhesive to the window. Options with hooks, clips or sign holders can support posters, hanging cards and smaller promotional signs.

Make sure both the glass and suction cup are free from dust and grease. Check the fixing periodically when it will remain in place for a longer period.

Shelf-edge clips

Smaller messages are often most effective when positioned beside the relevant product. Shelf-edge clips and sign holders can attach promotional cards to data strips, shelving and baskets without taking up shelf space.

They are useful for prices, special offers and product information. The correct clip will depend on the shelf profile, required angle and thickness of the card.

Temporary or permanent?

Temporary promotions suit reusable or removable fixings such as suction cups, clips, hooks, magnetic fixings and poster grippers. Longer-term displays may need screw-fixed components, stronger adhesives or more substantial ceiling hardware.

If the display position will remain the same but the message will change, a permanent support system combined with replaceable grippers or clips can provide a practical solution.

Which fixing should you use?

Application Recommended fixing
Lightweight paper poster Poster grippers with hooks and wires
Large suspended poster Top and bottom grippers with two suspension points
Rigid or heavier sign Suitable ceiling fixings with rated wires, chains and connectors
Window poster Suction cups with hooks, clips or sign holders
Small shelf promotion Shelf-edge clip or sign gripper
